Consider Jesus
"Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession."
- Hebrews 4.14
The disciples of Jesus debated the question of greatness on one occasion. Using a child, Jesus emphasized that greatness in God's kingdom is based upon being a servant. Putting oneself last rather than first is the key.
Greatness is often in the eye bo the beholder. A young teenager who is an outstanding player in six-man football may be characterized as great in his home town. But the same young man with the same skills might not be perceived as a great player at a major university. Even the great player for a university might not be considered great in professional football. Greatness is often determined by circumstances.
The Jews considered Moses to be great. The names of Abraham, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, and Elijah were treated with the deepest respect and honor in Israel. But the Hebrew writer wanted them to see the true greatness of Jesus.
The greatness of Jesus in no way diminishes the greatness of Morse or other great men of faith in Scripture. And yet, Jesus' greatness is incomparable with any man. Why? Because Jesus is the Son. He is divine. But in spite of His divinity, He sacrificed Himself for us.
